German national railway selects KISTERS for groundwater monitoring

24 October 2022

Efficient monitoring of groundwater level and quality

Aachen/Rosenheim (Germany), 24 October 2022.

As part of the transport reform, Deutsche Bahn (national German railway company) is continuously expanding and renewing the rail network in order to shift more traffic from road to rail. For example, as part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor – a trans-European rail project from southern Finland to Malta – it is also taking on the expansion of the northern approach to the Brenner Base Tunnel on the German side.

The aim is to protect the landscape, water balance and wildlife. Above all, it must be ensured that no adverse effects on the groundwater along the railway line occur during construction and operation. For the continuous groundwater monitoring required for this, DB Netz AG has now chosen the solution of the Aachen-based IT provider KISTERS. With the KISTERS measuring data management system WISKI, all water level and sampling data from the groundwater measuring points along the line are not only managed, but also checked for plausibility, validated and the results made available for documentation and verification purposes. “We were particularly impressed by WISKI’s cloud capability and its extensive functionalities, which enable us to answer almost any question about developments in groundwater,” says Carsten Bannwart, sub-project manager for geotechnical engineering at DB Netz AG.

The complete solution for groundwater monitoring is hosted in the security-certified KISTERScloud in the company’s own data centre in Aachen. Thus DB Netz AG has to provide neither costly servers nor its own personnel, but can rely on the services of KISTERS AG.

Within the project, cooperation takes place across national borders: with ILF and geo.ZT, two Austrian consulting firms with a great deal of experience in data monitoring are actively working with the KISTERS solution. In addition, there is a close data exchange with the Austrian Federal Railways.

“We are pleased to be part of this project for the transnational protection of groundwater. With WISKI, we provide the partners involved with an effective and cost-efficient data management solution. In doing so, we can make full use of one of our core competencies – groundwater monitoring – and our many years of experience in cloud solutions for water management,” explains Dr Dirk Schwanenberg, Head of the Water Business Unit at KISTERS.”
